WEAPONRY - 'Something I Lack' (Single)

Post-hardcore quintet Weaponry have unleashed their new single and video for 'Something I Lack.' By no means a new song, the single has already earned its status as a fan favourite during the

band’s live set and fans can now rejoice in the fact it’s been given the studio treatment and fine tuning by Daly

George (who’s also produced the likes of Creeper, Milk, and Boston Manor) at The Ranch Production House.

Combining new acquisition Tim Doyle’s thunderous drums with Jay Rozentals’ murderous bass lines, you’re provided with the chugging engine which drives the song forward. Doyle’s energetic and passionate drumming fits in seamlessly with the outfit on this track regardless of having only joined the band 11 months ago, giving Weaponry a rhythm section truly worthy of powering the post-hardcore juggernaut they have the potential to become.

With their Deftones inspired guitar riffs, father and son duo Dan and Max Ashworth conjure the peaks and troughs needed for the song to fully compliment Al Bristow’s gut punching vocals. Blending the crunch of the lower chugging riff with the top-note of searing melody, the Ashworths play together like a well oiled machine, placing the cherry on top of the powerhouse instrumentals Bristow needs to weave his tale of woe; “One is too much but it's never enough”.

'Something I Lack' is a lyrical tapestry of the bleak reality people face when they are gripped by addiction. It’s difficult to not feel the emotional intensity clawing at you as the song’s protagonist continues to circle the drain. Having lost his father to addiction, the extra gumption behind Bristow’s agonising cry of “I'm an amnesiac/ It all fades to black/ There's something, something I lack” hits that little bit harder.

As the song progresses, there is a glimmer of hope injected into the lyrics with a Mudvayne-esque bark; “Blue and a bit delicate/ But I can't quit/ I'm getting sick of this”, following the outfit’s ethos that there is hope to be found in every story. Agonisingly, this hope is soon ripped away with a cry of “I’ve done it again” and the spiral begins once more, with art sometimes imitating life.

While the cautionary tale on addiction Weaponry have served up is a tale we’ve all heard before, it’s unlikely we’ve heard it with the intensity and desperation for an addict’s pleas to be heard quite the way the Reading quintet have told it.
