Deception runs rampant within the realms of a cult. Preying upon the vulnerable in their time of need, manipulating instead of mediating, capturing a mind which is ripe for the controlling. Reading based post-hardcore outfit Weaponry break free from the shackles of the captor and expose the masquerade with latest single ‘Blindly Follow Us’.
After a quick clearing of the throat, vocalist Al Bristow launches into a full on, uncomfortable scream. Against a backdrop of bouncing pop-like guitar riffs, we’re exposed to the downright strange behaviours of these cult like groups. ‘Stand your ground like china in a bull shop’ doesn’t just border on lunacy, but downs an entire vat of the Kool-Aid then plunges into the empty vessel. Mixing hardcore screams with rap-like deliveries isn’t new ground by any means, but there’s something about Weaponry’s delivery that just doesn’t sit right.
The verses’ riffs enchant us and lure us in with well constructed guitar parts and bass that just doesn’t quit. However, as we become indoctrinated by the ‘ecclesiastical’ master of ceremonies, longer, more uncomfortable riffs blow the whistle on the idea that not everything here is as it seems.
Finally realising the true nature of the predatory group, Weaponry shifts the tone as they’re left with a ‘flood of can’ts and should’ve dones’. The second half of the song becomes disjointed as the merry dance the ‘three leaf clover encroacher’ has been leading falls out of time. Tantalisingly melodic guitars pave the way for ‘Blindly Follow Us’ to unravel, the guitar fading into a hazy toll of what sounds like bells at first. This darkness is finally infiltrated by the light as the deceptive bells soon become exposed as the clean piano notes they were all along.
