The irreligious union of hard rock and heavy metal is an holy one; soaked in infernal hellfire and steeped in white-hot flames, an avalanche of pumice that threatens asphyxiation. Sometimes, when all hope seems gone and everyone in the world looks as if they’ve gone off their rocker, we welcome that dysfunctional weighted blanket with an embrace of open arms.
America manufactures these heavy comforts in abundance, and solo artist Tommy Gibbons’ super-shredding competes for the champion’s title. As well as tackling lead guitar roles for Wade Cota and Farewell to Fear, among previous commitments in Tantric and Flaw, Gibbons explores his own individuality with his new single ‘Abandoned;’ a track with the approachability of an innocent lamb, yet the imminent underlying nature of a puma lying in wait.
With a guest appearance from Saving Abel’s Scott Wilson, his funky virile bass lines stand with a welcoming smile, the excitable riffs remaining a prominent feature throughout. Guitars rev up and erect an immovable wall of distortion, the tidal wave engulfing it’s surroundings as each note is indiscernible when compared to that of their fallen comrades. Post-Black Album Metallica-styled guitar licks thrash about like a fish out of water, satisfyingly complimenting the solo-era materiel of Ozzy Osbourne’s apocalyptic vocals that echo throughout the words “I’m feeling so abandoned.”
To complete the ceremony of unholy matrimony, Tommy Gibbon’s exhibits exquisite string manoeuvrability in compatibility of Zakk Wylde, but yet it is still the reintroduction of Herculean bass lines that reminds us once again who it is that’s leading the arrangement on this track and who is holding down the fort around here.
