When you think of Belgium, your mind automatically drifts to chocolate, right? Sweet, smooth, incredibly moreish until the need to vomit arises. For something to gorge on without the fear of an upset stomach, Belgian metal band Tim’s Favourite have unleashed new single, ‘A Deeper Advantage,’ along with a trippy lyric video edited by visual artist Drain Hope.
From the four-piece’s upcoming fourth album, ‘A Deeper Advantage’ presents the mental state of someone who has been paralysed by the Darwinian paradigm. Is there really no good, no evil; are we all just atoms and particles of little to no significance? Brutal groove-infused thrash riffs are the sound track to this moment of existential dread; ‘My days are spent without hope’.
Jan Pauwels’ moody vocals circle the drain as the song’s subject descends further into madness. A blood curdling scream released by those who’ve reached the end of their rope rips through the end of the first chorus. While the subject of Darwin and paradigms may be above a few people’s stations, the melancholy mixed with madness brings ‘A Deeper Advantage’ down to earth with a crash to bang our heads to.
The influence of grunge heavyweights Alice In Chains comes front and centre as heavy riffs soften and slow. Swimming through the muddled mind of someone who’s reached the end of their tether, the song grinds to a halt. ‘How long will this go on?’ is a question loaded with desperation and desolation, an overworking mind longing to cease. The louder, more frantic ‘How much longer, God?’ signifies the conversion to fully fledged anxiety and paranoia is now complete. As ‘A Deeper Advantage' reaches its climax, the repetition of ‘How much longer’ presents the uncomfortable image of a person sat on the floor, rocking back and forth as they clutch their head, waiting for the madness to stop.
When you look at the lyrical explanation for ‘A Deeper Advantage’, it becomes more convoluted than it needs to be. However, Tim’s Favourite has a method to their madness in that they have composed a song as heavy and brutal as its subject matter and execute it in a way only metallers know how; loud, thrashy, and broody.
‘A Deeper Advantage’ is available now across all major streaming platforms. For the latest news from Tim’s Favourite, including whether their Antwerp show on March 26 will go ahead, you can either visit their website, or follow their social medias linked below.
