The feeling of hopelessness is a cruel mistress who infiltrates our brains without our consent, rendering us co-dependant and attached to her cold steel and gaslit to her comforting ways. At a time when mental health, depression and anxiety are at an all time global high, midlander metallers Thunderous Jones pen the pent up emotions that reside within all of us with a music video to one half of their duo of singles; ‘Fallen.’
Vocalist Liam Coffey’s death growled introduction imitates the feeling of desperation followed by metalcore riffs from guitarists Danny O’Connell and Jack Banister that drags the weight of the song along like depressions literal ball and chain experience. The drums from Tom Bevan and bass from Conor Croxford morph the track into thrash metal territory in the verses whilst elements of djent seep through the cracks.
Guest vocals from Rainbow Grave’s and Kerrang!’s Johnny Doom presents itself as the pièce de résistance of ‘Fallen,’ and softer pop punk vocals add an engulfing air of numbness to the tune over the lyrics: “Playing on the edge of a knife…I can’t go home, it feels like suicide.”
A whispered pre-chorus highlights the feeling of finally giving up and surrendering to the tranquil darkness, unable to continue the fight in your breathlessness. Sharp stabs of electronic sounds tease the prog metal influence within the quintet, whilst cleanly sung, pop sprinkled choruses however offer a glimmer of hope for those who believe silver linings are abundant in even the darkest of clouds.
Thunderous Jones materialise and personify the black dog that trails many of us, ‘Fallen’ acting as the whistle that calls the hound back to our heels time and time again, no matter how far away you throw the ball. ‘Fallen’ is out now across all streaming platforms, debut album Stop the Show coming 2021, and for news on the band and touring updates follow their socials below.
