In recent times, LGBT+ rights have been a huge talking point. Throughout history, there have been several calls to action for equality for the LGBT+ community. While society has come on leaps and bounds, there is still a long way to go. Throwing their hat in the ring to discuss their desire for ‘free love’, Scottish stoner metal group The Rhubarb serve ‘Part Time Suicide’.
From current EP Black Sun, and follow up to ‘Drag Me To Hell’, ‘Part Time Suicide’ opens with a quote from 1968 movie ‘if…’; ‘Violence and revolution are the only pure acts’. Revolution hangs in the thematic air as the quartet are quick to reference just one of the many atrocities committed against our fellow humans. Sludge riffs and cymbal heavy drums support dreary dual vocals stating ‘Decriminalise cyanide’. This nods to famed mathematician Alan Turing who cracked the Enigma Code during WWII. In 1952, he was prosecuted for ‘homosexual acts’ for which he accepted chemical castration for as an alternative to prison time. However, Turing killed himself two years later, poisoning himself with cyanide.
For a doom metal outfit, ‘Part Time Suicide’ isn’t all doom and gloom. Clean female vocals lead the verse into an oasis of hope where ‘We’ll dance, smoke and dream’ once we have escaped ‘this forbidden place’. It’s at this point that the heavy riff begins to quicken, perhaps marking a period where the oppressive tone of this song and the government which rules us can be escaped. However, The Rhubarb give us a case of blue balls as the song slides back into the domineering churn. The cycle repeats towards the end of the song, but the dive into doom metal finally comes with frantic marching drums and thrashing guitars taking a stand against the dictator, lashing out through slivers of guitar hooks. ‘No more hatred, no more order’ begins the revolutionary chant. Sadly, tyranny isn’t far behind. The momentum of ‘Part Time Suicide’ grinds to a halt, dragging us back into the Orwellian churn for the song’s close, chiming the failure of the revolution.
