You reap what you sow so the saying goes. People make conscious karmic decisions almost constantly. To compare life to Demon’s Souls, you either have white tendency or black tendency; good or bad karma. Finnish rock monoliths The Rasmus admit they’ve fallen on karma’s bad side with latest single ‘Bones’.
Set to a bleak soundscape of ominous strings and heart piercing piano, Lauri Ylönen’s vocals are meek. “My heart is hidden” is sheepish and lamenting. The listener hangs on every word, wanting to find out what warrants such downtrodden musings. Pricking the guilty conscience, we’re sent thumbing through a Rolodex of far-fetched scenarios. Some may project themselves onto Ylönen as he ruminates “I orchestrate my own decline”.
‘Bones’ blooms into bountiful darkness. The swell in strings propelled by echoed drums leads us toward a sweet drop. The drop which never comes. Fans expect a lavish blossoming akin to ‘Justify’ or ‘Sail Away’ but this deadly nightshade’s poison doesn’t hit the same. The Rasmus drip feed us atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine through melancholy. A simple melody develops with slivers of lighter guitar, hope glistening through the darkness.
The Rasmus trap us in a cage of karmic consequence. Sat in the cell next to us, the Finnish rockers crave our validation. Affirmation that their extracurricular affairs don’t make them bad people. “It hurts to keep it quiet” Ylönen muses, full of sorrow, begging for forgiveness the only way he knows how.
‘Bones’ is available now across all major streaming platforms. For the latest news from The Rasmus, including new releases and tour dates, follow their social media linked below.
