Life is a battlefield of emotional landmines that threaten to leave permanent scars and lacerations upon our souls, and we struggle everyday to crawl delicately across the merciless plains of No Man’s Land, rendering some of us terrified to even step out the door and truly live at all. The Pretty Reckless wear their scars like war paint, and even with the heavy pull of the black dog, have soldiered on through to the other side with the bloodied, bruised and beaten evidence to prove it.
‘Only Love Can Save Me Now’ (ft Matt Cameron and Kim Thayil,) is the latest single to be released from the bands fourth studio album, Death By Rock and Roll, and also features the Soundgarden legends throughout the music video. A homage to the late frontman Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden vocalist was an irreplaceable influence over Taylor Momsen, making the addition of Cameron and Thayil’s grunge attitude to the ranks of Momsen, Ben Phillips, Jamie Perkins, and Mark Damon, unmistakably evident.
Lightning strikes and stormy seas flash across the screen amidst the bands’ performance, mirroring the internal battle of grief, rage and conflict from losing someone so close to our souls and immortal in our eyes. The waves of uncertain devastation wash over the band as Momsen confesses she’s “growing madly in deep blue seas, waves of sadness swallow me,” intwined with a neurotic guitar solo, militant drums, and Momsen’s moody vocals that help to elevate the staple end-of-days grunge vibe of Soundgarden.
‘Only Love Can Save Me Now’ doesn’t just mourn, but also celebrates the influences that inspire our creativity throughout our lives in the only appropriate way; music. Tapping into the minds of Cameron and Thayil, the track receives the royal treatment and in doing so, keeps the memory of grunge and it’s birthfathers alive.
