“It’s the Mojo fucking Slide baby,” proclaims The Mojo Slide’s vocalist Mark Wilks, honing in on his cool-cat attitude and Blues Brothers aesthetic on the bands’ latest single ‘To Kill a Monkey.’ The track comes as the 4th offering from the Cambridgeshire five-piece’s current album Manic Panic, not to be confused with the vibrant hair dye brand, although a tub of Electric Lizard certainly wouldn’t look out of place amongst the Trump masks, morph suits and toilets in the wacky and random music video that accompanies the track.
Matt Legg’s guitar work kicks off the tune with a clean and bluesy rhythm, the addition of Mike Fenna’s slide guitar sprinkling a coating of southern country warmth, the two genres skipping hand in hand down the dusty driveway on their way to spend a cosy weekend getaway in their rented wooden cabin. The harmonious retreat is cut short by a visit from guest harmonica handler Rick Holden and Fenna’s stabby piano performance, the two gatecrashers bringing the fun and games to the party that’ll continue long through the night.
Jaunty and merry drum patterns from Michael Graham and bass beats from Danny Savage creates a swagger that’s impossible to escape as your foot taps and the urge to grab the nearest unsuspecting soul for a quick boogie is overwhelming, the 3-minute feel good tune erasing the instructions of social distancing from our minds.
Coming to a crashing close, ‘To Kill a Monkey’ leaves a clamorous craving to learn the harmonica and play a solo whilst jumping off of your mother’s floral patterned sofa.
