THE JAILBIRDS - 'I Will Move On'

Rising above adversity has always been depicted as a "jumping up and down at the top of the steps outside the Philadelphia Art Museum" á la Rocky Balboa power move. After all, making changes to overcome whatever tribulation stands before you is the ultimate act of defiance. ‘I Will Move On’, the latest release from Canadian rock trio The Jailbirds screams ‘try to hold me/ I’ll still move on’ into the void which threatens to consume them.

Lifted from their upcoming concept EP, ‘I Will Move On’ serves as the last chapter to their character’s story as they vow to leave negativity in their wake. A sludgy bass line from Liam Hills creates the well worn mechanical groove which grabs us by the hips and leads us into our dance with destiny while Eric Parent keeps time with pounding drums. The guitar licks elicit a groan of appreciation from fans of darker Alter Bridge tracks as they hit the amygdala, prompting us to close our eyes and fully immerse ourselves with a soft bobbing headbang.

Myke Penney’s vocals are truly haunting as they move into the forefront over muted guitars and softened drums. ‘It looks like it’s started again’ he muses as The Jailbirds’ character stands at the crossroads. Launching into a chorus mirroring the mental breakthrough, layered vocals lend a massive, ethereal sound, the character drawing strength from the voices within which used to perhaps tear them apart. When turning to face the demon which has been haunting him, Penney’s statement of ‘Your time to has come to lay down and die’ shows no fear and no surrender. A crisp rendition of the guitar lick which has been muted throughout now rings clear as a bell as Penney whispers ‘lay down and die’, propelling the rousing and more poignant last chorus.

For those looking for a tune to take on their own inner demons with, ‘I Will Move On’ is out now across all major streaming platforms.
