‘Doldrum Dynasty’ is the latest single from Hungarian metaller’s The Hellfreaks, and is a cyclone of punk angst shot up with a dangerous dose of metalcore mayhem. Taken from their latest album ‘God on the Run,’ the 5th single features the stamp of New Found Glory’s Paul Miner and Escape the Fate’s Evan Rodaniche for pre-production and production, leaving the track with a sense of crucial chaos.
A demolished air of urgency and desperation bulldozes into the start of the song, with vocalist Shakey Sue’s banshee wails rattling inside the brain like a loose bird trying to find its way out of a house. Whilst maintaining the alternative balance of Hayley Williams and Gwen Stafani in her No Doubt days, the line “just don’t let me fall asleep because dreams are at war in my bed,” shatter between Jozzy’s incessant guitars, Béla Budai’s perpetual drums and Gabi Domján’s unabating bass.
Despite the blistering musicianship and belligerent music video, the songs lyrical theme can be applied to the preceding year and all its trials and tribulations overcome for many of us. Self-preservation and sheer will-power are at the heart of this pep-talk, and Shakey Sue states; “the message of our song couldn’t be more relevant today. Don’t waste your time on self-doubt, run for your goals, bring wind in your sail and be your own storm,” as the chorus demands you to “crave for the wind in your doldrum dynasty.”
Jozzy’s industrial guitar outro brings the track to an immediately decimating close, leaving the previous 3 minutes feeling like a lucid memory that’s just out of reach.
