Being consistently well-mannered and a well behaved citizen comes with a lot of societal pressures. Maintaining grace and a sense of decorum in a time where disrespect and savagery seem to be the norm leads to a need to people please which then breeds repression. With new single ‘Manners’, Parisian grunge punk duo Tarah Who? set to push back against those societal structures.
Inspired by her mother’s life story, Tarah’s bluesy toned vocals patter over sliding guitar and the upbeat drums of a dopamine infused punk song. ‘It’s hard to please everyone’ Tarah states, pleading to those like Mimi, her mother, that the effort may serve others and garner some external validation but it will ultimately come at your own detriment.
‘We don’t need your book or an institution for love’ calls attention to the nature of devoutly religious organisations which preach another set of rules as to how to behave, lest you should be denied the love of the deity or acceptance into the afterlife’s paradise. The marriage of slow yet luscious grunge tones from the guitar and vocals with the passionate bouncy beat of the drums encourage us to entertain the thought that blurring the lines which no longer serve us may not only help us to find ourselves but to find the love we have ourselves.
Air raid siren sounding guitars demand our attention during the song’s breakdown, making us question our own mild mannered nature and ask ourselves if it’s too late to find our edge. With these ladies as our mentors, the action of ‘please everyone and put yourself last’ may not be one we execute for much longer.
‘Manners’ is available now across all major streaming platforms. For the latest Tarah Who? news, including information about their upcoming album Exposed ahead of the April 9th release, and tour dates, you can either visit their website or follow their social medias linked below.
