STONE COLD CROWS - 'Before the Devil Knows We're Dead' | Single Review

Now I know for a fact that all of you have seen Loony Tunes, and some of you may even remember Wacky Races, so picture this: Dick Dastardly and Wile E. Coyote have teamed up against Penelope Pitstop and the Roadrunner in a bid to execute their most villainous plot yet. As Roadrunner and Penelope are approaching a sharp hairpin bend, the entrance of spiking violins and horn instruments heightens the suspense and makes the heart pound faster, the sweat dripping down your brows as you pray to the animation gods that our two protagonists can out-smart the evil plans of their enemies.

Canada based rock band Stone Cold Crows are the masterminds behind penning such imagination-bending film scores whilst melding a huge dose of heavy rock n’ roll into the mix for added emphasis, in the style of if Hans-Zimmer were a metalhead. Their debut single ‘Before the Devil Knows We’re Dead,’ is the work of Ottawa duo Mitch Cuming and Bryson Emmons.

Just when the danger is about to strike, distorted guitars thrash and crash through the screen to the rescue, their intimidation tactics being enough to make our childhood villains’ leg’s quiver and elicit a trickle of flaxen liquid to pool on the ground beneath them. Cuming’s vocals and lyrical content could not be more different though; “we’ve put a bullet in our unborn children, with the world we leave behind” channels the Southern twang of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s melodies and the reintroduction of horn instruments, whilst the James Hetfield inspired vocal gruff swaggers through on the chorus line “Before the Devil knows we’re dead” in true ‘Enter Sandman’ nightmarish fashion.

Amongst an emotive shredding guitar solo that reflects the spiralling dire situation of the lyrics, soulful harmonies cry out in desperation, preaching to Gods unseen. Despite being birthed amidst a global pandemic, Stone Cold Crows are already showing signs of seasoned skills in song writing, production, and instrument manipulation on ‘Before the Devil Knows We’re Dead.’ The track is available now across all streaming platforms and for more band and touring information head to their website here, or follow the social media links below.
