The relationship between the UK and US has been both a strenuous one and fruitful one, destined to be bound to each other since histories documentation of the lands’ inceptions for eons to come. One undeniable quality of the symbiotic relationship comes in the form of music; one continuously borrowing from the other and building on top of each’s ideas until we’re presented with a final product born of healthy competition to produce the best. The London-based post-hardcore quartet Small Mercy unveil their debut example of what can be achieved with single ‘Skin the Fur.’
Matt Walter’s clean, snappy guitars and Jay Swinstead’s crescendo of cymbals stumble into ‘Skin the Fur,’ tripped up by Jospeh Brown’s metalcore yelps. Unifying American alternative metal elements from the likes of A Day to Remember to the British standards of new-wave and new-romantic, vocals chop and change between each as Brown’s British accent drowns out to make way for sporadic metalcore shouts.
Joe Costin’s truculent bass lines encourages the impressionable double kick drum trills over the top of common lyrics of internal conflict and relationships; “what was once dead, is now alive,’ and “everything I loved is lost.” The irregularity of the songs’ structure can make it hard to differentiate between which section is which with no hint at the direction the hairpin bends plan to take you, before the track comes to a screeching halt.
Small Mercy and their premiere single ‘Skin the Fur’ exhibit embryonic elements, and with the right amount of nature and nurture can cultivate the fruits of their labour at the end of the day. ‘Skin the Fur’ is available now across all streaming platforms, taken off their debut EP The Sinuous Nature of Losing Your Touch out now.
