The pressure from boots on our necks has been growing heavier with each passing day, be that from parental figures, authoritative figures, romantic partners, or governmental institutes. It can take everything we possibly have to muster up the strength to overcome hurdles and emotional setbacks, but Skarlett Riot prove that it can be done.
With another single off of their upcoming record Invicta, due May 7th, the metal quartet’s newest offering ‘Stronger’ tastes naughtily sweet and sticks to the roof of the mouth like warm treacle. Luke’s metalcore drums roll like thunder and double over with intensity, Danny wielding modern metal guitars akin to Black Veil Brides or Avenged Sevenfold if they were on anti-depressants, resulting in tunes that revolve around happier themes.
Skarlett’s soft yet commanding vocals counteract the harshness of the musicality, channeling the spirit of a purple-haired heavy metal version of Paramore’s Hayley Williams as she states the track was “written about standing on your ground, standing up for what you believe in and not allowing yourself to feel inferior to others.” With lyrics that cut and slice with authority, “you wore that crown upon your head, now I’ll tear you down” demands attention and acknowledgement of the trail of devastation left behind in the shadows.
Death metal growls lurk within the shallows creeping dangerously close to the shoreline, giving the track the bite it needs to hold it’s ground. The line “we won’t be looking back, as we fade to black” pays homage to Metallica, ending with the lyric “we’re stronger than you” to reclaim the rightful power balance and even the playing field.
