Maggots, leeches, and back-stabbing snakes disguised as friends are things you should always be on the look out for on your radar, blending in and mingling amongst the more obvious but less dangerous lowlives. In a time where the Digital Age has made it easier and more accessible for internet trolls to get under our skin and wreck havoc in our anxious minds, it’s important now more than ever to remember that you are Number One.
Hailing from Switzerland, the foursome that make up Sickret take heed from the 90s nu-metal scene and inject their music with political and personal elements of the 21st century, a recipe that has resulted in their first single and music video of the new decade. ‘Worship’ tackles those who have wrongfully appointed themselves to a pedestal, the customary topic whisking up a batter of Limp Bizkit attitude, Korn angst, and Deftones defining musicality.
The message is immediately thrust into the atmosphere as vocalist Timmy Michels spits venomously, ‘I won’t worship you, or anyone else,’ creating a mood of anarchy, uproar, and revolt. Verses of Sandro Büchler’s industrial guitars crouch over the top of Andi Emmenegger’s patiently awaiting bare-bone drums, emphasising the rapped lyrics of ‘Envy must be earned and it’s the greatest praise/ your hate let me rise, your anger is no surprise// You wanna tear me apart with gossip/ that does not affect me, that does not affect me.’
The consistence of thumping bass from Christoph Krippel perpetuates the rage, ending on the profound ‘greed feeds the monster/ we get fucked either way.’ Having already shared the stage with Skindred, Jinjer, and Korn’s Jonathon Davis, Sickret make themselves a part of their peers and ‘Worship’ follows suit in its authenticity.
