SEEK HARBOUR - 'Ghost and Shadow' Reimagined

It isn’t entirely uncommon for rock and metal songs to start life as a piano composition. The piano gives you instant feedback on a song’s structure as it allows the freedom to play both rhythm and melody simultaneously. It’s also been used by many bands to compose the vocal melody as it can be easier to match pitches. Composition aside, there’s something incredibly evocative about the piano which allows a softer side to a band to come forward. With the re-imagined version of their debut single ‘Ghost And Shadow’, Kent’s melodic hardcore outfit Seek Harbour breathe new life into a song which was initially greeted with trepidation.

The quartet may have stripped ‘Ghost And Shadow’ of its hardcore thrills and spills, but lose none of their power as the song strikes an emotional chord with the weight of a wrecking ball. Subtle electric guitar ripples over melancholy piano chords, immediately immersing you within the thematic loneliness which comes from estrangement against your will. Intimately soulful vocals seem to almost murmur ‘This one won’t open with a cliché/ No broken hearts or rivers that run dry’. From here, Seek Harbour deliver a gut wrenching letter from father to estranged son, separated by toxic behaviours and environments.

What if all I am, is a ghost and shadow?’ houses a distinct crack in the vocal, resonating over meekly squealing guitar; the fear and insecurity bred from potentially failing a child rips your heart from your chest. Vocalist Edwin Hall shows incredible restraint and control over an emotional onslaught which could easily get the better of anyone.

We all long to be seen as more than a ‘Ghost And Shadow’, especially by those who are closest to us. Seek Harbour offer no peaks and troughs in this re-imagination, but with an essence of feeling as large as failure, they didn’t need to in order to catch a heart and break it as we sing ‘for now you keep me breathing’.

Re-imagined ‘Ghost And Shadow’ is available now across all major streaming platforms. For the latest Seek Harbour news, including impending releases and tour dates, you can either visit their website or follow their social medias linked below.
