Music which stays with us manages to carve a space in our hearts because it takes us on a journey, sells us on a story. Symphonic metal duo Scarlet Desire ask us to accompany them to a new world on an odyssey driven by life for their new single ‘Maiden Of Snow’.
The Finnish/Greek ensemble consisting of Danae Komodromou (vocals) and Esa Mikkola (guitar/drums) was formed in London in 2014. The combination of an educated classical soprano in Komodromou and a well seasons guitarist and metal composer in Mikkola concocts Romantic Goth metal that sates our desire for the fantastical.
‘Maiden of Snow’ was written and recorded many years ago, but with Kamelot’s Oliver Palotai providing beautiful orchestral sections and Finnish musician Heikki Pöyhiä lending some menacing growl vocals gives the song a brand new lease of life.
Building on a symphonic intro of enchanting strings, light marching drums, and the trickle of a flute, Scarlet Desire tell us the epic tale of hero Ilmarinen’s ‘quest for love’. Komodromou’s sensational three and a half octave range engages us throughout, becoming an enchantress in her own stead. Blending the bleak nature of Game of Thrones with the classical elements of Nightwish, Mikkola’s guitars sound massive and open new, spectacular soundscapes as we follow Ilmarinen to the ‘land of poisoned embrace.’ Now fully invested in the saga, Mikkola’s solo duelling with a piano melody shows the extravagant duality of symphonic metal, showing that the two combined result in something magical.
Spoken word for a sage recanting a sinister take on the creation of the world plunges our hero into treacherous territory. This shift in tone is marked by much heavier riffs, the lower register of Komodromou’s vocals soon replaced by Pöyhiä’s growls, introducing some peril for Ilmarinen. The end of the plight won’t be spoiled here, but there is a reason the ‘Maiden of Snow’’s alias is the ‘Queen of dread’.
‘Maiden of Snow’ is available now across all major streaming platforms. For the latest news from Scarlet Desire, including new releases and tour dates, you can either visit their website, or follow their social media linked below.
