Chronic apathy appears to be widespread. When we look back at this snapshot of our lives, we’ll be reminded how small life became and the overwhelming desire to feel “something more” which it coupled with. Rumours emerge from the apathetic haze with latest single ‘Neurosis’.
Pulled from recently released EP If Only You Could Feel Something Too, the Melbourne based alternative rock quartet plate up a happy sounding melancholy that was left to marinate in a concoction of lamenting verses, desolate choruses, and an eerily beautiful soundscape to perfection.
‘I don’t wanna be myself any more’ muses Jackson Bentley with an all too familiar monotony. Guitar patters through the atmospheric synth like soothing rain hitting glass. The aural pathetic fallacy the guitar parts feed us is fresh and heady, transporting us to a watery sunlit bedroom bathed in depression as Bentley cries ‘I’m wasting away’.
Emotional inflection comes to the forefront with the chorus. Once heavily delayed drums now ring clear as the gravity of the situation hits home. A cacophony of sorrow infused guitars shine through the fuzz of the synth; the question of ‘what would it take to come alive’ fuelling the drive of the song.
An appearance by Will King from metalcore group Windwaker adds another layer of needing to escape the indifference. King’s soulful rasp admits to his shortcomings before firing at their source: ‘I hope that you bask in your selfish ways’. The multifaceted nature of depression comes into focus as muted vocals mix into an ethereal guitar solo, showcasing a montage of negative human emotion.
At the single’s end, the hazy patter of guitar rains down on us again. As it’s joined with the vocalisation of muffled thoughts crying into the abyss, ‘Neurosis’ gives us a neon bathed snapshot of melancholy we will have no hesitation in looking at time and time again.
‘Neurosis’ is available now across all major streaming platforms. For the latest Rumours news, including new releases and tour dates, either visit their website or follow their Facebook linked below.
