A sublime summer breeze guides you through the tickling blades of dew sprinkled grass, takes you by the hand and leads you to walk elegantly barefoot into the shallows of a crystal clear lake, the ripples of water gliding softly over the surface with grace. Your ears prick up at the sound of a twig snapping from within the nearby thicket, half-expecting a deer to emerge and pass you your neatly folded clothes. But this isn’t Lord of the Rings and we’re not living in a magical fantasy world where everything is alright.
Instead, traditional heavy metal band Renegade Angel supply the soundtrack of a fantasy-threaded love story with new single ‘Forevermore’, channeling what little can be extorted from the influence of previous heavy metal ballads. Working with songwriter Jani Pöysä, the floaty flow of Alejandro Fernandez’s piano notes initially raise an eye brow or two, causing glances of doubt and hesitation amidst the lyrics, “Don’t drown yourself in sorrow, don’t wait to make that change until tomorrow.//Time is something you can borrow.”
Harnessing the blend of pop song structures with the musical arrangements of metal, ‘Forevermore’ treads heavily into the field of 80s cheese ballads from the likes of Foreigner and Extreme. Hoping to claw back some of the aggression that metal stands for, Fernandez’s vocals return with nothing more than a shred of grit, yet the strenuous effort within the hoarse vocality is obvious.
Renegade Angel have strayed far off the path of what could be considered heavy metal, and onto the unkempt and neglected trail of 80s rock ballads. ‘Forevermore’ is available across all streaming platforms now. To stay up to date with band information click here or visit their social medias below.
