A deceptively slow, cleanly picked guitar intro tricks it’s way out of the magicians hat of ‘Darker Path,’ the latest single from West Midland metallers Recall the Remains. Musically influenced by the likes of Trivium and White Chapel, the introduction of pitchy, strained vocals across the tracks verses channel an attempt of early Black Veil Brides, but it’s the cleaner melodies sang from the bands bassist that elevates ‘Darker Path’ to a higher position on the podium.
Hammering drums and djenty bass lines compliment the lyrical theme of trials of torment, ‘in all the darkest places, I’ve found the strength to carry on,’ and of suffering and anguish, ‘fairytales lead me astray, towards the darkest places.’ Harrowing low pitch bends make for an apt soundtrack to a horrifyingly bad trip, a journey in which hallucinations of killer clowns may result in permanent psychosis.
Death growls extricate the breakdown, a demonic couplet of guttural roars resulting in a nightmarish void that’s more gratifying and felicitous for the track compared with the verses’ vocals. The aural ear worms that resides in the core of your stomach is Wall of Death inciting, a feat that would have a festival tent pulled out from beneath the safe and sheltered earth.
Recall the Remains have their sights set firmly on their target, and getting the balance of melodic grit right will see this gothic metalcore quintet triumphant in their endeavours.
