Paint if you will the picture; rows upon rows of militia waiting to march into what looks to be the final battle of the war. Excitement, expectation, hunger for glory, maybe even a little bloodlust, but underlying it all is a sliver of doubt, worry, fear, insecurity. Then finally he appears on the brow of the hill, the commander on horseback, majestic hair billowing in the wind. Ready to address his army with words so powerful, they’ll stiffen the upper lip of any man. With ‘The New Frontier’, Swedish trio Reach delivers that very speech.
Opening with a whistled tune which wouldn’t be out of place in a Western, it’s hard to wonder if and how this new frontier is going to differ from the old. Then it comes. Drums mimic the speed of a galloping horse. A horn section overlays the divine guitar work making this tune upbeat, drawing others in to join the ranks as they press on through to the other side. ‘Driven by our grandiosity’ Ludvic Turner, Marcus Johansson, and Soufian Ma’Aoiu lead the charge but it’s made clear with their Queen style vocal harmonies and Muse inspired combination of classical and modern instrumentals that these commanders are mounted upon horses of metal and brandishing laser pistols.
Turner’s vocals are put on stunning display as he goes from bouncing, melodious yarn spinning of how ‘we drank the oceans, we burned the skies’ to a high tone raspy battle cry which launches a grandiose instrumental section. Heavy like Led Zeppelin’s 'Kashmir', the fusion of thick dual toned guitar with the robust nature of a string section shows a capability of some immense live shows to rival that of Muse in times to come.
‘The New Frontier’ was the last song written for Reach’s upcoming album A Promise Of Life due in April and is intended to lead their audience into “an era of explosive intimacy with songs wrapped in mystery”. While the mystery is yet to be revealed, the closing whistle is the same as the intro and now has new meaning, nothing is the same; ‘Welcome to the new
frontier’.
