Greek philosopher Democritus once wrote “Happiness resides not in possessions, and not in gold, happiness dwells in the soul”. It’s this attitude, or lack thereof, toward consumerism French rock band Perseide combats with their latest single ‘Set Me Free’.
A playful melodic riff opens the song with smatterings of electronic tones you’d recognise from arcades. These light pulses bloom into full blown synths over Perseide’s characteristically much harsher punk rock riffs. “You complain about everything you want” pulls zero punches, allowing the pockets of bombastic chords to drive the point home.
Sadly typical for some members of society, there is an arms race towards a “social media worthy” life. Consumed by the need to meet a construct which doesn’t actually exist, Perseide’s drums sound like the pounding of demons at your door. “You will die complete in your gilded cage” drips with resentment and judgment. Makes it no less true for those who choose possession over connection but that spiked comment stings.
The scream of “I’ve got a devil in my head” is desolately guttural. The perspective shifts from outsider to sufferer of the affliction. The mental weight of the chorus serves as a golden ball and chain screaming “you have everything you want but at what cost?”. This second side of the story has skeletons escaping the closet and running the ship aground.
A slug of a breakdown has Perseide at the bottom of the spiral, clawing at the sides in a bid to save themselves from becoming “corrupted mankind”. ‘Set Me Free’ closes with a solo which, like the rest of the song, is slow and methodical. The intended target of these jibes may be stinging for some time to come.
