PALMIST - 'Spark'

Fusing genres together is always going to be met with some trepidation from fans. Some of us like those rigid boundaries as it feeds us a little expectation. More of us however, are leaving the pigeon holes to the birds and letters, allowing music to take us somewhere new and unexpected. Essex five-piece Palmist take us on a wonderful mystery ride, blending modern rock and 80s pop with elements of new wave for new single ‘Spark’.

Releasing ‘Spark’ on April 2; Palmist take us by the hand and lead us into a dark, velvet walled club with a slick synth opener. The pop-punk vocals work surprisingly well with the underlay of hazy funk guitars as he spins the tale of the electric moment your eyes fall upon tonight’s love of your life across a crowded room. ‘She got me trapped like a ship in a bottle’ perfectly encapsulates the notion of time standing still and the entire world around you fading into nothingness.

The chorus bounces into view as the spark becomes a flame. Loaded with catchy 80s vocal hooks, the carpe diem energy Palmist brings to the table infects you through osmosis and catches you hook, line and sinker by the time a rock inspired heavier riff infiltrates the end of the chorus.

Feeling sedated’ not only speaks to that exciting spark of lust which consumes you, but also the dopamine hit this song hands out as you fully buy into what Palmist are selling. The rock breakdown before the end of the song sounds bizarre on paper but it fits the song so well that it wouldn’t have the… well, spark without it. Palmist are a prime example of what can happen if we let go of the idea of structures genres.

‘Spark’ will be available across all streaming platforms from April 2. For the latest news from Palmist, including new releases and tour dates, you can follow their social media linked below.
