It’s so easy to get swept up in emotions of a moment which causes you a lot of stress. While it consumes you now, will all this really matter in, say, six months time? Melodic hardcore band, Novus reflect on these temporary tempests with hard hitting new single ‘Water Under The Bridge’.
Hailing from Australia’s Gold Coast, the five-piece use ‘Water Under The Bridge’ to close out a four-single story arc which spanned the last 12 months. Last of the tetralogy, Novus drag us into the white water rapids, hitting us from all angles with explosive and aggressive instrumentals.
From the initial swell of a spine tingling riff, Novus plants the seed of “it’s gonna kick off here”. Finding their signature pocket, the rhythm section teases us with a salacious hardcore groove. Larynx shredding vocals recount the battle fought against darkening mental health using ‘nothing but my adopted concrete state of mind’. Lower brusque mixes with the main vocals, conjuring an undertow powerful enough to suck you into the depths.
‘Water Under The Bridge’ serves as culmination of a hard fought war against oneself and becoming ‘reborn back in this world’. The ability to start afresh and ‘make amends with all my demons’ is a powerful moment in and of itself, marked by Novus with a transcendence much akin to the sensation of the bass dropping. A loud, heavy growl signals a drop in tone and presents the listener with a simple question: will you choose to be consumed by the currents represented by these enticingly crushing instrumentals, or will you allow yourself to let it go, to become ‘Water Under The Bridge’?
