NOT NOW NORMAN - 'Run Boy (No Longer)' & Geo Moon

Coming to terms with the sad revelation your partner isn’t the person you thought they were is no easy feat. If that revelation comes on the back of domestic abuse of any kind, it becomes just that bit harder. Tackling the subject and the act of taking your power back is Taylor-Grace of UK hard rock band Not Now Norman and artist Geo Moon with electro-rock hybrid ‘Run Boy (No Longer)’.

Bass heavy pulses resembling the thump of a heart beat or the sound of soles hitting tarmac opens the track. Taylor-Grace’s stripped cry of ‘My emotions torn apart’ is raw and strikes the heart with white-hot discomfort. Fat electronic beats instil the fear of escaping, anxious of being pursued. Coupled with drawn out edgier Miley Cyrus-esque vocals, the single’s aura is one of fear and uncertainty.

The song implodes with the introduction of the guitar, shifting the power from perpetrator to survivor. Much like the guitar’s riff, this shift is slow and intense, mirroring the thought process of the survivor as the illusion of the abuser comes undone. Wanting to pick apart the seams of lies and gaslighting, Taylor-Grace hits home with the line ‘You’re twisting the truth’. ‘If only they knew’ speaks to the abuser’s nature to manipulate those around them with a well-constructed pretence of a well-meaning, likeable person, careful to make sure they would never be suspected, and worse still, their victim wouldn’t be believed should they ever come forward.

‘Don’t waste your breath/ I know what you are’ may sound as if it drips with venom, but it in fact oozes power. Having the strength to leave an abusive situation takes an unbelievable amount of stones, a fact which is applauded here by Not Now Norman and Geo Moon in a gracious yet bold statement.
