Metal as we know it found its roots in the fantastical; fully exploring the ability to build worlds of the ‘Holy Diver’, ‘Angel of Death’, and ‘War Pigs’. The mythology of metal is rich, dense, and let’s face it, cool as fuck. Adding another silk thread to the tapestry is Nocturne Wulf with their remastered single ‘Troll Hunter’.
The Glaswegian quintet made up of Bobby McDougal (vocals), Jamie Paterson (guitar), Chris Horne (guitar), Steve Scott (bass), and Matt McArthur follow their 2020 single ‘Silverhand’ with 2:45 of pure heavy metal. Based on a Scandinavian ‘found footage’ mockumentary of the same name, ‘Troll Hunter’ weaves the epic tale of the film’s subject Hans doing what he does best: hunting and killing trolls.
Opening with a face melting riff of boss fight soundtrack proportions, McDougal sits us round the campfire and romances us with thrash style vocals, setting the scene of ‘the land of the ice clad Jotnar’. Supported by pounding drums of intimidation, the bass heavy melody comes at us like a slog to the gut. Though the rhyme scheme of the lyrics can be seen as a little rudimental, this no frills approach to metal is incredibly refreshing.
‘Annihilate/ Devastate/ Eviscerate’ barks the entourage, fuelling the hype train for not only Hans, but for those of us who will rightly have this on a gym playlist, searching for “it does what it says on the tin” motivation. Though the song is simply about this character’s battle with ‘ten foot of monster’ which will cement his status as ‘myth of ancient folklore’, there is plenty of room for the interpretation of a thematic fight against adversity, but sometimes it’s best to see things how they first present themselves as that can be pretty fucking cool too.
