The invention of technology was initially a revelation in assisting us with our day to day lives and making things easier for those who needed the little extra help. Light switches go unappreciated, microwaves don’t get the recognition they deserve, and escalators are a God send when your knees start to give you trouble. Computers however have had the opposite effect. Whilst they may have been a blessing with video calling friends and family when travel and socialising was banned, and have kept us entertained with years of streaming content, all the while being completely consumed, co-dependant, and entirely reliant.
The struggle is universal, having the world at our fingertips renders us lazy and the ability to hide the parts of ourselves we dislike leaves us staring at the mirror at a reflection of a version of our being we no longer recognise. Belgian pop rockers No Pan Kissa dissect the loss of control and grip on reality, with the ballad-styled single ‘Captain’s Fall.’
Soft, clean guitar strums from Maxime Hoyoux radiate with warmth, mimicking the same fleeting feeling we get when entering our online bubble. The use of manipulated synthesisers tip-toe subtly beneath the surface, bulking out the track and oscillating threateningly. The slow, slogging tempo externalises the feeling of existing whilst carrying a heavy burden upon our ever-weakening shoulders.
Decorated with the staple grunge element of woebegone lyrics and Dominique Messere’s gloomy vocals, it’s effortless to lose yourself in the sway of the melodies. Furthering the grunge influence is Hoyoux’s guitar solo, brimming with feeling and emotions, the individual technique popularised in the 70s and 80s by the likes of Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen, and boosts the track to new heights.
No Pan Kissa force us to acknowledge the detriment of our behaviours with ‘Captain’s Fall’ and exposes the disadvantages of technology, perhaps successful in convincing a minority of us to keep our phones at arms length. ‘Captain’s Fall’ is out now across all streaming platforms, you can click here to stay up to date with band and touring information, as well as following their social medias below.
