Time may heal most wounds, but the Australian government’s poor handling of the 2020 bushfires that devastated countless homes, laid waste to thousands of acres, and took the lives of Australia’s helpless wildlife has left a charred taste in the mouth of native rockers MOFOiSDEAD. The band took a political stance and penned their latest single ‘The Gospel of Engadine’ in response, channeling emotions of anger, disappointment, and frustration all tied up in a palatable bow.
Guitarist and vocalist Paul Galagher leads the intro with distorted open chords and a pinch of xylophone that brings up suppressed memories of those godforsaken useless music classes in primary school. Galagher’s soft and drawn out vocals float with effortless buoyancy above verses that are driven by Luke Pammenton’s drums and Scotty Saunders’ ethereal bass lines.
The easy-listening of the musicality is a ruse though as the lyrics ‘you told us to chill, shut up and be entertained’ cut through the ether like a machete through butter. A more upbeat key change in the chorus forces the vocals to the forefront, the main focus of the lyrics being the line ‘what would you do if we were on fire?’ The rhetorical question sets alight a chilling blaze in the pit of your consciousness.
Galagher’s guitar solo draws comparisons to 90s grunge and alternative, with flickers of hard rock as a stripped back chorus lyrically emphasises the songs’ message, the claps mirroring a sense of community and togetherness in a time of grief.
Ending the track with the words ‘the marketing man an arboreous liar,’ MOFOiSDEAD cement their determination for a cause that they believe in, spreading the much needed message of unwieldy solidarity.
