With a tumultuous year coming to a close with yet more Covid-19 confusion, it's safe to assume we need to inject some pep in our step. York based group Miles and the Chain Gang have served their latest offering, 'Drag Me To The Light', to do just that.
Vocalist Miles Salter penned the lyrics during April's lockdown, reflecting on the imposed absence of human interaction and the loneliness it brings. Armed with imagery Bob Dylan would appreciate, Salter perfectly encapsulates the sad frustration that accompanied the sensation of "howling at the moon crying in the night."
'Drag Me To The Light' is not all doom and gloom. Billy Hickling's jazz drumming and Tim Bruce's Red Hot Chili Peppers worthy bass line perfectly juxtapose the morose musings, giving the song an infectious beat you can't help but do the two-step to. By Salter's own admission, the song is funkier than what the band would normally produce, but Alan Dawson's Nile Rogers inspired riffs belong here, creating a soundtrack we should all play when reminiscing about the times we caught up with mates over a pint at our local.
To truly bring the song to life, the base quartet brought in some reinforcements in the form of
Sean McMullan, Holly Taymar-Bilton, Sam Pirt, Thomas Rhodes, and Jonny Hooker. As soon as you hear Rhodes’ tasty trumpet licks set the tone, it’s clear the band made the right choice. Taymar-Bilton's vocals over the choruses softens the lyrical edge. The addition of Pirt's accordion and Hooker's organ complete the track, allowing the band to realise their Madness and UB40 inspired vision.
Miles and the Chain Gang have given morale a much needed boost with a song we can't resist busting our best dad dancing to with a smile on our faces.
