Black. Lives. Matter. After a tumultuous year both here in the UK and over in the US concerning the very presence of institutional racism, it’s important that those three words which hold so much weight and seem to put the shitters up those who have some form of power are never forgotten. Lending their voice to the choir of allies, cinematic rock group Midgar release brutal new single ‘Nemesis’ alongside a chilling video which can only be described as essential viewing.
‘Nemesis’ is the follow up to ‘We Don’t Make The Rules’ as the second single from the London quartet’s upcoming third album Unity. Starting in 2008, TV and film composer Andy Wilson-Taylor set out to create a dark, melodic band which combined classical piano and strings with epic modern rock. What Wilson-Taylor went on to create is something truly special.
The quiet, slow burning orchestral intro lures you into believing you’re in for an easy, comfortable listen. Mere moments later, aggressive metalcore screams accompanied by weighty riffs explode into the eardrums, jarring against the softness. ‘Do we really have to skin you alive/ Before you wake up from this criminal apathy?’ displays Wilson-Taylor’s rage toward a society which has allowed itself to become complacent about injustice and ‘legally justified’ murder. Midgar pulls no punches in calling attention to the insidious nature of law enforcement’s attitude towards black people; ‘Give them what they deserve/ Or they will put you in the ground’.
The powerful thing about ‘Nemesis’ is its unwillingness to stick to one pace or style of delivery. Traversing through screams, melodic musings of ‘revolution in the air tonight’, to spoken word intended to rile the masses to ‘break down these walls’, Midgar’s mission statement is to make you listen, to have you join the fight against the forces which govern our lives and dictate quality of life based on the colour of a person’s skin. ‘The end of days’ is long overdue. With juicy guitar riffs that get the adrenaline pumping and words which shake you to your very core, Midgar are stating ‘The time is now my friends’.
‘Nemesis’ is available now across all major streaming platforms. For the latest Midgar news, including new releases and tour dates, visit their website or follow their social medias linked below.
