MATT PEACH - 'Cut Our Teeth'

As the pandemic continues, we find ourselves losing more and more live music venues. The closure of the legendary CroBar last year had us all reeling. Camden venue The Black Heart could soon follow suit with the news that its owners have launched a campaign to raise £100,000 by the end of March 2021 in a bid to avoid permanent closure. Seeing our culture of live music taking a massive hit, Derbyshire's Matt Peach penned the single ‘Cut Our Teeth’ in protest of “constant closures of grass-roots music venues, and crucially a celebration of these vital places”.

From his current third album Epiphany, ‘Cut Our Teeth’ is indeed a celebration of nights out that now grow ever smaller in the rear view mirror. Its opening vocal hook harkens back to the times we stood in a crowd and screamed at the top of our lungs to our favourite songs. The upbeat, sing-song of the guitar is sure to raise a smile and bust out a few moves you used to save purely for gig venues.

Peach’s vocals have a ring of Joey Ramone as his distinct voice spins a yarn of the importance of these venues; ‘Was there we cried kill the death disco/ And we first heard “Hey Ho - Let’s Go”’. From start to finish, ‘Cut Our Teeth’ is a raucous party tune to raise spirits and merriment. The guitar solo is short, sweet, and characteristically punk in its low tone, anxious to get back into the fray in one last go round of the chorus.

‘Cut Our Teeth’ is a folk-punk love letter to the venues with floors our soles would stick to but

would set our souls ablaze. Nights where we would have the time of our lives associated with the aroma of ‘Blood and beer and Mary Jane’ as well as a post-gig burger or kebab on the train home. Matt Peach captured the magic of an event that so few of us can properly put into words and showed appreciation to the places that house so many good memories. Come for the folk-punk, stay for the good times, and hope we don’t lose another venue to ‘Just tarmac and concrete high rise’.
