To the weaker mind, life may have an easier time of guiding you from one path to the next as you take no notice in your limitless ability to move your own feet from left to right. When the slightest inconvenience rears its ugly head, the foolish and lazy are quick to blame outside forces beyond their control, comfortable as they are in their ignorance. The stronger-willed however know that life is a coward and will immediately back down when grabbed ferociously by the horns and told that we make our own destiny.
As part of their approaching EP due Spring 2021, Belgian sludge metallers La Nausée take pride in their unwavering will power with the latest single, ‘Split.’ Speaking about the tracks inception, the band state: “This song is about where we can place ourselves in this world. The force of nature is unparalleled, the mind is too small to grasp the whole picture, but not us. We are to decide our state of being and make ourselves whole.”
Like any union, the marriage of sludge metal guitars and death metal drumming come together to create disorder, acting as if they’d been churned up from inside a combine harvester in tornado season. Deep, distorted and drawn out vocalisation treads water beneath the blanket of pummelling drums, the subtleness sliding just out of sight in your subconscious, as the tone mimics that of the voices inside your head that aren’t of your own making.
It may not convince you to get out of bed at 7am and be productive with your day, and instead convinces you to finally angrily confront your neighbour who’s been throwing banana peels over their fence and into your garden for months, but ‘Split’ inspires a burst of motivation and determination none the less.
