More and more of us are longing for the invention of a time machine so we can teleport back to much simpler times. Decade of choice for many is the 80s. In lieu of the DeLorean, Justin Larner serves up some nostalgia with new single ‘Find Your Way Home’.
The UK bred guitarist calls on Gary Evans for drums and singer Jane Gould who gives us country tones infused with the grit akin to the likes of Ann Wilson. Camaraderie is the theme of not only this single but of Larner’s upcoming album Hot And Dangerous slated for release on April 2nd. After a stint of playing in bands including Grand Ultra and a break from music which saw him become a truck driver, Larner released his first solo record A Taste For Space in early 2020. For his sophomore effort, Larner has worked with 4 different vocalists including Jane Gould and Elisha Martin, the latter featuring on previous single ‘Can You Feel It’.
"Riding high, waves of glory" follows a booming Miami Vice style drum roll into typically 80s bouncy guitar riffs. When coupled with lyrical themes of coming back to the person you belong with and being held accountable for your actions, ‘Find Your Way Home’ becomes a song of encouragement and acceptance. Tapping into the gospel element of the rock genre, the infectious chorus calls out ‘"I'll help you to atone" over bluesy riffs, holding out the hand of salvation. After all, all any of us wants is to be saved from ourselves.
Aside from one instance of lyrical clunkiness, ‘Find You Way Home’ is a structurally sound composition with easily distinguishable verses, bridges, and choruses. Larner’s slick Journey inspired solo showcases his natural talent and ability to construct a song as he shows incredible control over the speed and tone of his playing, ensuring nothing is out of place. An amazing feat for a musician who taught themselves using little more than magazines, videos, and tab books.
If the rest of Hot And Dangerous is as well constructed as ‘Find Your Way Home’, it stands to
be a display of Justin Larner’s natural talent and years of experience coming together for a suite of songs we can blast on the way to our summer vacations… pandemic permitting.
