Family is one of, if not the most important things in our lives. We come from these people, learn from them, and share some of the hardest life experiences with them. If you’re fortunate, this unit is a strong one. The devotion that creates within us isn’t something that’s widely talked about, so Immerse’s new release ‘With You’ is a beautiful, yet hardcore tribute to the family unit.
Pulled from the band’s upcoming sophomore album The Weight That Holds Me Here, which is available for pre-order now before its March 26th release, ‘With You’ flaunts a sentimental side to the Bristol quartet. The range of emotion Archie Hatfield displays, bouncing from the timid fear of the verses to the brutal declaration of loyalty throughout the chorus, confronts what it means to be human.
‘With You’ is intense and eerie, distorted guitar from Tim Brown playing a sad, simple melody. Fuzzy underlying bass lines creep beneath the surface, heightening the expectation for everyone’s worst nightmare; children creepily singing nursery rhymes. Hatfield’s vocals throughout the verses, while haunting, have a rather different inflection; "I live each day in fear/ ‘Cause losing you would break my heart in two" speaks to the fear we all have: what will become of us when we lose our family?
Shortly after the one minute mark, Immerse return to their heavy nature, with clean guitars playing a thicker rendition of the verse’s melody, though the brash tone now brings ‘With You’ to an emotionally charged peak. Supported by thrashing drums, Hatfield’s scream "I am here for you no matter what it takes" resonates on a base level.
With the second, and last go round of the chorus, a bone rattling bass line comes to the forefront. The dense, heavy sound almost hides the tremolo of a higher pitched guitar, perhaps indicative of our tendencies to not be completely forthcoming about our emotions. This bass line plays an integral part in the outro; easily the crowning jewel for the metalcore outfit. An idea concocted during pre-production, Immerse complete their eerie soundscape with a pounding heartbeat of a bass part played over reversed drums. This outro is so intense and haunting that it will stick with you long after song’s end.
