‘Change isn’t always simple’, Alabama metal group House Of Curses proclaim in delectably dense new single ‘Bounce House’.
Formed in 2015, House Of Curses invite us inside their twisted fun fair and it quickly becomes apparent this bounce house isn’t the bright, colourful inflatable we’re accustomed to. Filled with lead instead of helium, Dan Stockfisch’s soul-filled vocals of dirge revel in a gloom ridden ‘version of this world’ to the tune of bass heavy chugging guitars. Pounding double kick adds some meat to the bones of ‘Bounce House’ as Stockfisch begins to enclose himself within the metaphorical walls of isolation.
‘Sometimes I find I’m reliving every circumstance that’s kept me from the light’ may read from the diary of anyone who has the black dog as a companion, but it’s this histrionic simplicity which makes House Of Curses’ lyricism relatable. While some make peace with being stalked by the hound of depression, there’s a glimmer of hope that the Southern-fried foursome doesn’t count themselves party to that. ‘Rebuilding my structure in parts’ prick the ears of the black dog as dual guitars meld together in melodious harmony, hopefully alluring enough to tempt the beast from its Master.
A low, dense guitar solo stalks through ‘Bounce House’, mirroring the vortex of worsening mental health as it blends with the tonal ring of a higher frequency before dragging it down to the depths. ‘Bounce House’ deprives us of the happily ever after we look for in our music, dumping us in the ambiguity of standing at the all important cross roads. Art imitates life for House Of Curses, but will this become a case of ‘I’ll drink before I drown’?
