Family bands are always hit and miss. Personal and professional priorities get mixed and muddled, personal issues get brought into work and professional issues get trudged back into the home, leaving a muddied mess soaking into the fabric of the carpet that no one will take responsibility for. Mancunian 4-piece Hollow Storm prove the opposite; that a bond of brothers and cousins is solidified like no other, as the mentality of blood being thicker than water makes up the skin and fibre of this modern hard rock quartet.
Fronted by brothers Jack and Aiden, accompanied by cousin Dylan and adopted family member Sheldon, Hollow Storm raise the curtain and unveil their debut offering ‘Strangers.’ Twinkly pianos soften the blow of distorted guitars that excrete the bite and grit of Alter Bridge musicality, the surfacing of Jack’s earnest guitar solo even before the first verse reminds us that to stick to standard song structures would defeat the point of rock’s rebellious and defiant past.
Alternative features whisper their influences into the ears of Hollow Storm, absorbing and expelling the information in the form of shaded mid-range vocals that blend in with the surrounding wallpaper as the A Day to Remember vocality becomes apart of the musical furniture. Lack of human interaction over the past year has reverted us back to hermits, day-fearing vampires and anxiety-ridden groundhogs, and we can all relate to the sentiment of “running from strangers, running from danger.// Is this my life now?” People whom we once knew and held close are now unrecognisable, but with the distance and hindsight that can sometimes have worked out for the better; “Away from strangers, away from danger.// This is my life now.”
