Staring a new era of music can be difficult for any band as it presents a hell of a lot of challenges. However, rising from the ashes of hardcore group Dead Town Nothing after a personal loss, H.O.U.N.D.S demonstrate that not only do the flames of the phoenix burn bright but they can be ferocious. Following on from the re-release of the ‘Dead Town Nothing Tapes’ in September, H.O.U.N.D.S’ focus now shifts to the future with scathing new single ‘Beast’.
Dealing with the subject of the inner demons we can all face and how they can turn us into monsters, vocalist Ashley Hoy displays dominance in a matter of seconds with one simple sentence: "You were supposed to be the monster… but I’m the fucking beast." Hoy’s lyrics are venomous and his delivery is nothing short of unrelenting. Much like the inner demons his growl represents, Hoy knows his vocals grab you by the scruff of the neck with no chance of escape as he barks "You’re stuck with me/ Now this is your home."
There is no doubt this hound has the bite to back up the bark. The Isle of Wight outfit hasn’t missed a single beat in their time away, mirroring the schadenfreude of 'Beast’s' lyrics flawlessly. From the introductory and perfectly utilised solo, the bass is eviscerating and heavy throughout. Fast-paced and aggressive drums stop just short of ripping your still-beating heart out of your chest, while the savage duelling guitar riffs leave you the uncomfortable feeling that that you are the one being hunted by this beast.
‘Beast’ showcases H.O.U.N.D.S’ intention to be a hardcore heavyweight in the future, chasing down the likes of Brutality Will Prevail and The Dillinger Escape Plan with conviction and hunger for decimation in their hearts.
