Loss and grief are emotions we as humans expect and anticipate throughout life, but it still somehow knocks us on our asses, lodges the breath in our throats, and catches us blindsided. In the wake of death the debut album from Gravity Machine was given life, as ‘RED’ births it’s 4th single ‘Standing Stones.’ The track materialises as a reaction to multi-instrumentalist Niall Parker losing his wife, with the help of drummer Bob Shoesmith and guest collaborations from the likes of Pete Miles and Kat Marsh, each of Bring Me The Horizon and Architects fame.
Despite the ferocity of bands mentioned previously, ‘Standing Stones’ ambles into the room without a care for its surroundings as the prominent buoyant bass line exudes immediate swagger. Soft, prosaic lulling vocals counteract the funk laden guitar riffs, flaunting the fusion of differing genres that influence the diverse duo.
“Heard my brother say to me, ‘don’t fight with fate,’” showcases the trippy and tranquil feeling of the lyrics as they sit on the bench sidelines, slipping in and out of focus and drifting between the forefront and background. The tranquility is extended further with a guitar solo that gives the aura of being underwater owing to the captivating delayed effect, the soothing serenity inescapable.
The perfect soundtrack to a dazed and blissful trip, (don’t do drugs, stay in school kids,) ‘Standing Stones’ takes you by the hand and unlocks the world on the other side of the looking glass.
