With its bright lights, gambling opportunities, and various dens of iniquity, there is good reason Las Vegas is also known as Sin City. Having a moniker as weighty as that, it only makes sense for this city to be called home by death metal band Godless Throne. Embracing the collision of symphonic and extreme metal, the Vegas quartet summon new single ‘Scourge and Death’.
Weighing in at a hefty eight and a half minutes, ‘Scourge and Death’ aurally reads like a ritualistic summoning of the Dark Lord to perhaps occupy this godless throne. Jay Horn (vocals), Tom Giacalone (guitar), DeLorean Nero (guitar), Serena Dalton (drums) construct a spectacular tableau of Lucifer arising from the bowels of Hell with their in your face guitars and brutal double kicks with lashings of choral backing vocals. Bouncing between moments of heavenly operatic vocalisation and the aggressive tones of Horn’s snarls sounding as if they come from Regan MacNeil creates the image of cracks appearing in the middle of highways, diverting them to the molten underworld.
Infectiously melodic guitars overlay the machinations of doom, proving Godless Throne aren’t here to fuck around and they will see your soul for the claiming. Fast, aggressive solos eviscerate the landscape of the quiet daytime life of Mother Earth, bringing forth the apocalypse to the soundtrack of complete annihilation. Having fully sold us on their brand of black metal, ‘Scourge and Death’’s closing paunchy riffs may have us clamouring over each other, desperate to be the first to sacrifice ourselves to the Fallen Angel.
