Now 2021 is upon us, it’s hard to believe there is still a massive stigma around men’s mental health. Armed with captivating new single ‘Do It Again’, UK based Glass Waves dive head-first into the unnecessarily taboo subject.
Alternative-rock fivesome Glass Waves, comprised of Bryn Williams (lead vocals/synth), Tomos Gashe (rhythm guitar), Sion Jones (lead guitar/backing vocals), Dewi Williams (bass) and Sion Roberts (drums), is a fairly new venture but with various UK tours under their belts, each member of the band is a seasoned musician in his own right.
The soft vocal delivery of the first verse almost depicts the apathy toward facing the wolves at the door yet again. An exhaustion which isn’t just for those who identify as anything other than male. Understated bass and guitar riffs ripple beneath the verse. While the layers should create a heady groove, the clean sound is refreshing and doesn’t distract the ear. If you did want to wander however, you’d be treated to an engrossing riff you’ll find yourself tapping out whenever your mind’s idle.
Apathy becomes grit with energy boosting drums from Roberts, marking the peaks and troughs of living with mental health issues. Refusing to stay silent, Williams becomes louder, crying out ‘Don’t you tell me it’s over/ Until it’s over’. This defiance is accompanied by a fear of never escaping the ‘devil on my shoulder’ and its insidiousness. Though the chain looks to be broken as Jones’ vocal during the breakdown is a haunting echo, eliciting a spine-tingling hope that the inner voice of destitution is finally on the turn. ‘Do It Again’ is a statement full of moxie, and the determination to break the cycle of keeping male mental health a silent venture.
