Hate is a powerful thing. If the root is left unaddressed, it often breeds vicious behaviour. Channelling spite into something more positive than beating seven bells out of someone, Canadian duo Deadwood serve up a slab of devastating deathcore in new single ‘Call Out’.
After a ten year hiatus, the pair from Montreal waste no time in unleashing their aggression. Intermittent electric buzzing accompanied by blasts of crushing bass make for uneasy listening straight out the gate. A chilling passage of spoken word speaks of overwhelming hatred. Reading like the diary of a serial killer, we’re given an insight into the suffering this person has endured and how it “shaped who I am”.
From out of nowhere, a huge growl of profanity explodes into the soundscape. An aggressive guitar riff and slicing bassline leave utter destruction in their wake. “I finally figured you out” exudes pent up frustration and betrayal. Having percolated in anguish for immeasurable amounts of time, Deadwood’s powder keg finally explodes. ‘Call Out’ demonstrates that the shrapnel from this destruction will obliterate anything within their immediate radius.
Deadwood’s drums sock us in the face with an iron fist. The low frequency of the guitar throughout melts with the razor sharp bassline making for a suffocating bridge. The musicianship within deathcore is effortless here, making ‘Call Out’ an unforgettable listen.
‘Call Out’ is a no holds barred exposé of an abuser who is “as shallow as they come”. The target of lyricism which is a little too controversial for us to reference may want to sit this one out. However, there is something in us all that isn’t above the schadenfreude of introducing them to their karma.
