Life is what you make it. You are the master of your own destiny. This is the message Californian grunge trio Dead Soul Revival hope to convey with their upcoming debut album Ignite. Lifted from this album is fan-voted single ‘Black Roses’.
Dead Soul Revival was formed in 2017 by Matt Clark (vocals/guitar), Scott Freak (drums), who were both formerly of the band Freakhouse, and Kendall Clark (bass). Blending the maudlin tones of grunge within their winding guitar and the upbeat aura captured at various points, ‘Black Roses’ is alluring in its simplicity.
Matt Clark’s vocals fall into a hypnotic pattern, planting the imagery of a grunge Pied Piper, seducing us away to dance the merry dance toward the cult of self-love. The chorus with vocal hooks abound mirror the indoctrination process as Kendall’s backing vocals represent the enchanted party with the absent minded repetition of ‘Do you know…’.
‘Black Roses’ takes a turn for the darker as creepy guitar melodies further ensnare us, encouraging us to ‘trust yourself, trust your pain’. Whether that means leaping to our doom, or becoming eternally enslaved to Dead Soul Revival’s message, the mesmerisingly understated guitars combined with metronome drums mean this post-grunge trio could go anywhere and we would willingly follow.
As a slight aside, we here at FREAK would like to offer a get well message to Matt Clark who recently broke his back whilst skiing. We’re hoping for a speedy recovery and to see him back on his feet soon.
