On the back of their widely successful second EP ‘Frontier’, East Anglian five-piece Dead Reynolds grace us
with infectious new track ‘Voices’.
Opening with a soft piano melody and brooding vocalising, coupled with lyrics of ‘Sew down these scars that we're bleeding from’, it’s easy to assume ‘Voices’ is another tale of woe.
While the lyrics tell a story of ‘dreams that just turn into dust’, by the time you’re brought to the chorus, what should be a morose tune has turned not only up-beat, but uplifting. Battling the notion all is lost when
mental anguish washes over us, Dom Greenwood proclaims ‘If we survive the storm and sail away on the run/ Change the tide and lives we live’ that it's us who are the captains of our ships and destiny. The belting chorus longs to be a moment of catharsis for both band and audience, a craft Dead Reynolds has honed since their inception in 2018.
The call and response of the breakdown’s ‘I feel like giving up again’, accompanied by the lush sounding riff makes the phrase potent, evoking an electric release. Feeding from the power of pop-punk and the epic production that comes from alt-rock, ‘Voices’ stands to be an incredible moment should the band take this to the live arena.
With melodically catchy guitar hooks complimenting their verses and a spattering of beautifully harmonised vocals harking toward Deaf Havana, ‘Voices’ intends to be the step toward a new style sonically. The release of their debut album in the spring will tell if they have achieved this to its full potential, but ‘Voices’ is a very promising indicator.
