We all have that one person we gravitate to at various points in our lives. Even when they’re not so good for us, when they aren’t even the same person we used to know. Should the relationship between those two souls turn sour, or even toxic, we should call time. As Dead Reynolds demonstrate with new single ‘Bright Lights’, some of us can’t… or don’t want to, to our own detriment.
Lifted from debut album Breathe With Strangers due August 20th and following previous single ‘Voices’, ‘Bright Lights’ is a highly evocative tableau of what it means to be bereft as a result of that dysfunctional relationship. ‘Keep me falling until the last sound’, the opening line echoes as if it’s being called out into the abyss over melancholy piano. Rich dual toned guitars explode into the soundscape with booming drums as layers of emotions come to the forefront under the metaphorical bright lights.
‘I’m waiting for the next chance to set us free’ sounds desperate for something to change, for the shackles of whatever toxicity plagues them to finally break. The chorus tells the age old story of ‘waiting’, of the patience we can fool ourselves into having because we love the idea of the person and we can’t be without them. ‘Take a chance now on broken angel hearts’ patters over residual guitar from the chorus, masquerading as the desolation we’ve all felt at one time or another. Peeling the layers of the onion human emotion can be, a sweet guitar melody perforates the second verse, the realisation of how far down the rabbit hole we’ve fallen coming to light.
A stripped back breakdown consisting of piano, soft drums and resounding bass continues to paint the picture of a mind coming undone with the loss of “our person” and the devastation it can bring. The repetition of ‘Take me with you’ reeks of the fear which comes from being abandoned or left behind by someone who has become our crutch. The desperation which is often born from this lashes out as lush guitars return to the song with a much heavier instrumental, marking the emotional peak of the song, a short solo mirroring the scream into the void.
‘Bright Lights’ illustrates this five pieces’ intention to build on their meteoric rise and aren’t afraid to expose their emotional selves as they go. Blending dark, crushing riffs, with delicate melodies, and soulful vocals which tear us apart, Breathe With Strangers promises to be an epos covering the full spectrum of emotion and sentiment in brutally honest fashion.
‘Bright Lights’ is available now across all major streaming platforms. For the latest Dead Reynolds, including upcoming releases and tour dates, you can go to their website here or follow their social media listed below.
