CIRCUS 66 - 'Jekyll or Hyde'

By now, everyone may have heard a reference to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or even made one themselves. A creation of Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr. Henry Jekyll and his alter ego Edward Hyde serves as a commentary on the extremities of dual personality. One is inherently good natured while the other is evil. Nowadays, it’s become part of our language, a phrase we use to describe someone who can be… unpredictable in terms of their personality. This unpredictability within a person is the premise of Circus 66’s recent single ‘Jekyll Or Hyde,’ which gets the cinematic treatment with their newest video.

The current Circus 66 line up; Annabelle Zaychenko (vocals), Matt Pearce (guitar), Luke Ward (bass), and Leigh Holley (drums) took shape in 2019, but the Brit rock band itself started life in 2013. ‘Jekyll Or Hyde’ is the third and final single from the band’s upcoming debut album Follow The Black Crow slated for release in early June.

‘My shadow seems to have it made’ proclaims Zaychenko with her brand of earthy in-your-face vocals. With the energy of Lzzy Hale, Zaychenko’s voice fits perfectly over the fast paced drums to the point of spitting bars. Groove driven guitar riffs meld with funk powered bass to create a shoulder shimmying rhythm for guitar hooks to sprawl themselves over and tickle the spine. In a song as fast paced as this, it’s difficult to allow room for the instruments to breathe. So when the guitar swells into a distorted old school rock n’ roll solo with string manipulation strong enough to bring out an involuntary “ooft” from a listener, not only does the guitar get its moment to shine, but the song has its own Jekyll or Hyde moment. ‘Dancing with a lifetime full of pain’ has never been so upbeat and down to earth at the same time.

‘Jekyll or Hyde, which one are you now?’ To find out for yourselves, ‘Jekyll Or Hyde’ is available now across all major streaming platforms.
