Placed in the hands of others, our mentality is a fragile thing. When our trust in someone is broken, disappointment dons a cape of anger and takes over us. Metal juggernauts Bullet For My Valentine pilot the mech of rage into visceral single ‘Knives’.
Pummelling drums from Jason Bowld pound us into submission. Matt Tuck and Michael Paget team up to take us down with their trademark combination of thick low tuned riffs and tasty licks of lunacy. “Let the madness begin” Tuck bellows with a ravaged laugh, dragging us into his derangement.
Tuck’s distorted vocals unravel like the bruised ego. Betrayal spikes every word, venom built up from “living with snakes”. ‘Knives’ may not be the brisk slog to the face fans were expecting yet that’s nothing to be scoffed at. This slow dissection of the psyche is no less unhinged but let it be known this chaos is controlled.
‘Knives’ is a savage severance of a connection gone sour. While some seek closure and reconciliation, ramblings of “bury the trust/ lay it to rest” proves Tuck is a man of the opposite. The brutality stemmed from the lyrics carries over into a juddering solo which jolts us to the brink. Like Scar holding Mufasa over the stampede, Bullet For My Valentine shows us their evil grin. “Keep on digging your own grave” sends us hurtling toward our crushing end.
Taken from their upcoming eponymous album due October 22nd, ‘Knives’ is a welcome return to form for the Welsh mob. With this first single, the band whet our appetites for quintessential Bullet For My Valentine. Whether that will be given to us in the form of savagery is yet to be seen.
