Since the announcement of Tier 4, social media has become awash with rage toward a government which is seen to have been failing its populous. Harnessing the chaos this has wrought, Broken Calling enter the fray with ferocious new track ‘Redemption’. Dubbing themselves as “5 angry boys from the South East of England”, Martin Osborne and Callum Green, along with James Falconer, Jack Apella, and Connor Snyder waste no time in reminding us; metal’s rebellion against the status-quo is alive and well.
From Snyder’s initial battle cry, ‘Redemption’ is a full-frontal assault against the Conservative government and its handling of Covid-19. Snyder has the bark of a militant figure as the order is given; ‘Scream with me/ Fuck the government/ Fuck Boris’. There is even reference to the similarity between a speech the PM gave earlier in the year and that iconic Lord Farquaad line, which makes for a chilling moment in the band’s self-made video.
Apella’s pounding drums of war echo across the track, bolstering the call to arms needed for the chorus gang vocals; ‘This is my redemption, this is my time’. Duelling guitarists Green and Osborne bounce between melodic metal string work and resonating hardcore riffs seamlessly. The pair have created many ear-worm worthy licks which may or may not be badly sung around our dinner table. Falconer’s bass becomes more prevalent as the song breaks down, with fast aggressive riffs mirroring the ferociousness of the lyrics as the
song switches from frustrated scream to venomous growl.
At its crux, ‘Redemption’ is a politically charged song full of Rage Against The Machine’s “fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me” attitude. Broken Calling force us to not only question our government but also our ‘systematic obsession’ with following the rules at a cost to our own values. A powerful follow up to the ‘From The Ashes’ EP, we can’t wait to hear what emerges from Broken Calling next.
