Is a good time guaranteed with alcohol consumption? It can be all too easy to tip the scale into a bad time. Alcohol poisoning, acts of physical violence, falling into a pit of despair, and misadventure. All without having full control of your body or mind. Stoke On Trent metalcore band Black Coast show us their Vodka Smile with their latest release.
Constant spiralling guitars remind us of the stumbling drunk at the local pub. Thoughts and motor control becoming muddled to the point of falling to the floor in a puddle of vomit… or worse. “I live lost in the rhythm and waste” screams vocalist Charlie Hewitt, his lines sounding like intoxicated ramblings. The rhythm he screams to is as chaotic as the mind. While the beat of the drums tells us this should be a party song to crank up and let loose to, Black Coast’s lyrics feel like the party is long over.
Black Coast’s night goes from bad to worse, plunging into self-pity and depression. “I don’t wanna be me” becomes the infectious hook for those who long to be someone else, using alcohol to hide the pain. A slower transitional riff begins the circling of the drain. Black Coast drag us into the spinning room, drums thumping like the headache they’ll be having the morning after.
Having a vodka smile feels good until it doesn’t. Black Coast set out to reveal the spiral of a drunk in real time. ‘Vodka Smile’ will haunt the minds of some while being a cold shower to others. It’s an uncomfortable dose of reality which will burn like cheap vodka.
‘Vodka Smile’ is available now across all major streaming platforms. For the latest Black Coast news, including new releases and tour dates, follow their social media linked below.
