BLACK COAST - 'Paradise'

A dark and depressing origin story presents itself with twists and turns that only serve as the nails in the coffin that count down to the gratifying feeling of finality. The demonic grunge overtones and Jack Beardall’s dismal bass lines in ‘Paradise,’ Black Coast’s lead single off of their upcoming debut album slated for a 2021 release, utilises nu-metal modernity whilst keeping a close eye on their metalcore roots. Releasing new music for the first time since 2019, with all the ups and downs the two years since then have seen, the quintet from Stoke-on-Trent now wield weapons with the sharpest blades and bloodied handles that give them the insights to pen a tale of tortured torment and personal realisation.

Charlie Hewitt’s moody sloth-like vocals akin to Eric Dover sets the melancholic atmosphere before Scott Pinnington’s and Joe Mayor’s all-consuming schizophrenic guitar work falls head over heels into a pit of insanity crawling towards the chorus. Matthew Clarke’s simplistic drums mutate into a raging bull seeing red, the frenzied beast adding chaos to the track that falls away into the softer verse again, like Jekyll and Hyde doing their best to present the appropriate personality when confronted with an audience. Or an abusive partner flicking off their psycho switch in the company of others.

‘Draw me in, I’ve got a taste for more/ That psychopathic feeling, of not caring at all;’ the antagonist enters again with harsher vocals, the screams of pain a reaction to the losing internal battle against our inner demons as the breakdown comes in hot with speed metal drumming that counteracts the initial grunge vibes, which now get made to look like a blissfully sunny Sunday morning. Death metal guitar pitch bends signifies the final stage in ‘Paradise’s’ metamorphosis, as Black Coast tease a brand new dawn.
